My Favourite Films of All Time: 60-51

This has been a long time coming, as I have been waiting to see certain films, but now I think it's the right time to do it. Mind you, these will probably change come tomorrow or something, but right now, here are my 60 Favourite Films of All Time. I'll be doing 10 a day, so here's 60 to 51.

 

60. There Will Be Blood

Featuring one of the greatest performances in recent memory by Daniel Day-Lewis, this towering epic is a force to be reckoned with. Drink it up.

59. Metropolis

The defining silent film, Fritz Lang's 1927 classic is a feast for the eyes as well as being such a compelling film. A film way ahead of its time that still amazes today.

58. Magnolia

The second P.T Anderson film here is a long one (over 3 hours), but inventive directing and a stellar cast, featuring a movie-stealing performance from Tom Cruise, demands every second of your attention. Oh, and not to mention the raining frogs.

57. Akira

I'm not a fan of anime, so I was prepared to dislike this. But it was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. An anime epic that's unmissable. It will, like it did to me, make you think twice about dismissing anime. Shame it's being re-tooled as a live action film by Hollywood.

 

56. Full Metal Jacket

Yeah this isn't as high as Kubrick's other films or other war films, but it's still a masterpiece by the great auteur. It just shows you how good Kubrick was at his craft.

 

55. The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert

Another film that I didn't expect to love, this Australian classic is one of the most irresistible and joyful films I've ever seen. The fact that it's so true and Australian despite the fact that 3 drag queens (or 2 and a trans-gender) travel through the desert is what makes this so good.

 

 

54. No Country For Old Men

2007 was a tough year at the Oscars, with there being so many great films. But there could only be one winner, and this was it. It deserved everything it got. The Coen's masterpiece? I think so. 

53. The Departed

Or, the film that finally won Marty that long deserved Oscar. It, like No Country, deserved everyone it got. This is made even better by that awesome performance by Mark Wahlberg who, I'm sorry, was robbed that year. Damn you, Alan Arkin!

52. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy 

This is modern cinema at it's very finest. It's unlikely we'll find something as epic as this in this modern age. Kudos to Peter Jackson, who's never been as good as this since, for adapting such a grand book series into such a grand movie series.

51. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

A romantic comedy that doesn't make me want to vomit! And something that shows that Jim Carrey actually is a fantastic actor! This is one of the best films of the last decade, and has one of the best screenplays I've ever seen. Amazing.
